Results

Everything under Results works on the solutions of your studies. You can add, change and re-plot results without solving again.

Node Purpose

Datasets

What results are computed on: a study’s solution, or a cut line, cut plane, grid, revolution, mirror and so on, made from one.

Derived Values

Numbers: integrals, averages, maxima and minima, point values, global quantities.

Tables

The numbers that derived values produce.

Plot groups

A 3D, 2D, 1D or polar view holding one or more plots.

Export

Images, data, VTU files and reports.

Plot groups

Add one with Results  3D Plot Group, 2D Plot Group, 1D Plot Group or Polar Plot Group. Each plot group has:

  • a Dataset and a Solution selection: the last solution, a time, a parameter value or an eigenmode;

  • a Title (automatic or your own), and a color legend with optional max/min;

  • for 1D groups, axis labels, log scales, Manual axis limits (x and y minimum and maximum, in the plotted units), grid and legend position.

Plots inside the group inherit its dataset (Dataset: From parent) unless they set their own. Click Plot (or press F8) to redraw. A study creates default plot groups when it finishes, for example Temperature (ht) and Isothermal Contours (ht).

Plots for 3D and 2D groups

Plot Shows

Surface

An expression on the surfaces (3D) or over the domains (2D), with a color table, or uniform color and wireframe.

Volume

An expression inside the domains (3D).

Slice, Multislice

Planes through the model, set by count or coordinates. Multislice uses several planes in x, y and z at once.

Isosurface

Surfaces of constant value, with a level legend.

Contour

Lines of constant value (2D) as lines, tubes or filled bands, optionally with level labels.

Arrow Volume

Arrows of a vector field, at the mesh nodes or on a regular grid, with normalized or scaled length.

Streamline

Streamlines of a vector field, started on selected boundaries or at points, as lines, tubes or ribbons.

Mesh

The mesh of the dataset.

Line

An expression along edges or boundary curves, as lines or tubes.

Annotation

Text at a position, with eval(expr, unit) for values.

Radiation Pattern

An acoustic exterior-field quantity on a circle (polar) or sphere (3D).

Attributes you can add under a plot:

  • Deformation: shows the plot on the deformed shape, for example the displacement in solid mechanics, scaled.

  • Selection: restricts the plot to some domains or boundaries.

  • Color Expression: colors a plot (arrows, streamlines, lines) by another expression.

Plot Shows

Line Graph

An expression along a Cut Line (or along boundaries in 2D, including a Box Selection), against arc length or a coordinate. With All in the plot group’s selection, one curve per output time, and per parameter value of a Parametric Sweep.

Point Graph

An expression at a Cut Point against time or the sweep parameter.

Global

Global quantities (coupling operators such as aveop1(T), eigenfrequencies, electrode currents) against time, frequency or the sweep parameter.

Table Graph

Columns of a Table.

Line Graph (Polar)

An expression along a circle, against angle.

Directivity

The exterior-field level against angle and frequency.

Each graph has line style, width, color, markers and a legend.

Expressions and units

Each plot has an expression and a unit. Click the button beside the expression for the list of variables in the solution. Expressions combine:

  • solution variables with COMSOL-style names (T, ht.tfluxMag, solid.mises, spf.U, cd.iloc, acpr.Lp, …), listed in Result variables;

  • coordinates x, y, z, parameters, Definitions variables and coupling operators;

  • functions and operators, including real, imag, abs, arg, conj for complex fields.

The Unit list offers the units of the expression’s quantity (°C, °F or K for a temperature, MPa for a stress, mm for a displacement, …).

Parameters in result expressions take the values the solution was computed with. If you change a parameter after computing, the existing solution keeps the old value, and Messages says which parameters differ from the model until you compute again. Parameters added after the solve are available for postprocessing.

Datasets

With several components, every component has its own Solution dataset per study, and a plot or evaluation sees the component of its dataset. See Several components. A plot group, plot or evaluation whose study is out of date gets the asterisk mark too, with Shows Study 1, which is out of date in its tooltip.

Dataset Gives

Solution

A study’s solution (created with the study).

Cut Line

Points along a line from Point 1 to Point 2, for line graphs.

Cut Point

One point, optionally snapped to the closest boundary, for point graphs.

Cut Plane

A plane through a 3D solution, for a 2D plot group (quick plane at a coordinate, or point and normal).

Parametric Extrusion 2D

A 2D dataset or cut plane extruded over the solutions of a sweep, the parameter becoming the third axis.

Revolution 2D

A 2D axisymmetric solution revolved into 3D, over a start and revolution angle, with layers.

Mirror

A dataset mirrored in a plane (3D) or line (2D). Datasets can be chained, for example a mirrored cut plane.

Grid 2D, Grid 3D

A regular grid of points, which may extend beyond the mesh (acoustic exterior fields).

Parametric Curve 3D

A curve x(s), y(s), z(s), for example a spiral around a loudspeaker.

Derived values

Add them from Results  … (Evaluation group) or by right-clicking Derived Values. Give one or more expressions with units and descriptions, then click Evaluate. The result goes to the Table pane and a Table node.

Derived value Computes

Volume/Surface/Line Integration

The integral of an expression over the selected domains or boundaries. For a boundary flux such as cd.iloc, the integral equals the conservative total current.

Volume Average

The integral divided by the volume.

Volume Maximum/Minimum

The extreme value and its location.

Point Evaluation

Values at clicked geometry points or at coordinates.

Global Evaluation

Global expressions (coupling operators, parameters, eigenfrequencies, electrode currents), for every solution of a sweep at once if you choose.

The names follow the space dimension, as in COMSOL: in 2D, Surface Integration integrates over domains and Line Integration over boundaries.

2D axisymmetric models

In 2D axisymmetric models, integrals and averages are taken in the revolved geometry, weighted by 2πr (Compute integral in revolved geometry, on by default). A Surface Integration of a heat flux over a boundary is then the total heat flow through the revolved surface. Clear the check box to integrate over the r-z plane.

Tables

Each evaluation writes to a Table (shown in the Table pane). Copy it to the clipboard or export it as CSV with the pane’s buttons, or plot it with a Table Graph.

Export

Node Writes

Image

A PNG of a plot group, at a given width and height.

Data

The node coordinates and comma-separated expressions, as CSV.

VTK Unstructured Grid

The solution as .vtu, for ParaView.

Report

An HTML report with the parameters, the model tree and images of the plot groups.

Click Export at the top of the node’s Settings window to write the file. Image Snapshot in the Graphics toolbar saves the current view directly.

Every results node and setting is listed in the reference: Plots, Datasets, Derived values, Export.
